The Hungerford massacre occurred in Hungerford, Berkshire, England, on August 19, 1987. A single man, unemployed and living with his mother, with no evidence of a romantic or sexual relationship in his life, he perhaps had precious little to be happy about. "She asked me what my dad looked like," he says. He had a few friends but always shied away from any sporting or social events at school. Short for his age, Ryan was often teased and bullied but never retaliated and consequently avoided other children. "They were looking for bullet holes and spent shell cases to collect. I couldn't walk. While Ryan roamed Hungerford, murdering and maiming people he'd known for years, a woman lay dead in Savernake Forest. "I said he could, and he said: 'When that man shot that man, all of the birds flew out of the trees and shat themselves'. 8 - Francis Butler Ryan intimated he might be prepared to give himself up. 13 - Victor Gibbs "I just broke down in tears," Mr Wainwright says. Marcus Barnard, a local taxi driver, had been a father for just five weeks when he was shot dead. "We were all told to lie down and not move. The loss affected him profoundly and he became increasingly withdrawn, often going off alone to the shooting range, or working on cars. She managed to drag herself into her house and survived. She was a respected and popular member of the community and used to work as a dinner lady at the Hungerford Primary School before becoming a part-time waitress at the Elcot Park Hotel, where she worked for 12 years, until her death.Ryan grew up in South View, Hungerford and relatives remembered him as a quiet, mostly sullen and quite self-centred boy. In 1987, Michael Ryan committed a killing spree that left sixteen dead and sixteen injured. The report also said the operation was hampered by press helicopters making so much noise it was difficult for police on the ground to hear or relay instructions. Michael Ryan murdered 16 people before turning the gun on himself. She told him someone was shooting across the back gardens of their road. Moving up Fairview Road, Ryan found neighbour, Abdul Khan, 84, a retired restaurateur, mowing the lawn in his back garden. "'Some blokes gone mad with a gun', they said. "It's funny, I've killed all those people but I don't have the guts to blow my own brains out.". "If he had the choice - to die from a horrible disease like that, or be shot, I know he'd choose the bullet. I was due to go and visit her, but I thought I couldn't. "I knew Id been hit. 'It's a show that I'm passionate about': Will Mellor on 'Cops Who Kill'. By now, the name of the gunman was circulating. This powerful mix of emotions is often later expressed in an inappropriately violent response. As Mr White turned his Toyota Crown into South View, he was shot in the head and died instantly. He was shot three times in the groin and the leg with the AK-47 rifle and died where he fell. However, the jovial atmosphere was soon to be shattered and peoples lives changed forever.Savernake Forest, a popular recreational area seven miles from Hungerford, was a favourite haunt of Ryans, where he would spend great deals of time pretending to be on army manoeuvres. The fact was that they were prevented from entering the danger zone, for fear of being shot themselves. The act banned semi-automatic and pump-action rifles; weapons which fire explosive ammunition; short shotguns with magazines; and elevated pump-action and self-loading rifles. It was during this time that he lost his caretaker job. "There were no big wounds at the back of Lisa's legs. At 1.30 pm specially trained officers from the Tactical Firearms Unit were brought in and local police officers assembled closer to town. The case of Michael Ryan, who went on a killing spree in the small town of Hungerford, resulting in the murder of 16 people, including his own mother. Sent them away.". [CDATA[// >
