Does he pass enough? You start with whats the goal? And remember, betting on yourself is the secret to your success. After college, Dan Feigin got a job at Trevor teaching English and coaching sports, which meant one important thing: He had access to a gymnasium in New York City, where indoor hoops are more precious than parking spaces. I'm so honored, man, to have you on the podcast. For Feigin, Lasry, Edens, Dinan, head coach Jason Kidd and the entire organization, Antetokounmpo, born and raised in Greece to Nigerian immigrants, is a business unicorn. And you know what their experience is? For more information on Engage or to book talent today, visit letsengage.com. Now, youre talking to your wife and your children and youre moving from New York City to Wisconsin. John: Hey, Peter. Michael Red: Were you always a risk taker or was that cultivated in your household or where did that risk taking ability come from? He was a truly taught consumer products, marketing, and operations guy, was okay. How do we work together? Just what you said is like were always coming in this balance of how do we, we want Giannis to represent the Bucks brand. And also, obviously some additions with Jrue Holiday and other great players we have this year. Engage is the go-to spot for booking talent, for speeches, custom experiences, live streams, and much more. Peter Feigin readily admits that, as president of the Milwaukee Bucks, he lives in the fantasy world of professional sports. Michael Red: Giannis Antetokounmpo and that team is so special to watch. If I become that guy, I dont need to play anymore. His brother and Lee were just as excited. Then you mirror that off the court. Because, I mean, you lived here for 11 years and I guarantee you, as great as everybody was, they still thought of you as a Columbus, Ohio guy. Within 45 minutes, we had this unbelievable excitement of, were nuts, why dont we do like take home its big ordering out. We happen to have like the largest kitchen in the state of Wisconsin. Jan 16th, 2016 by Mayor Tom Barrett. Whos got next? Lee said. Peter: it worked in such a great way for me and with a magic wand really evolved into one of the most incredible jobs ever. Off the court it is best practice. Peter: So my ring sits in my underwear drawer in our house which is like, great and its got readily accessibleI mean its huge. "He plays with the Bucks 95 percent of the time. And with that, Feigin became the business brains behind a team about to set NBA standards in architecture, basketball operations and technology -- only he didn't know it. He ran companies like Alma and Posner and cosmetics. So, the end of the story is I was responsible to hire CEO, so I got two or three candidates I knew Mark and Wes would hate and they couldn't hire them because they didn't like something about them. His company, Fortress Investment Group, also owns the eSports team FlyQuest. Peter: Married. "Can you imagine? But boy, if I could have mastered that a little bit earlier that that'd be one of the things I would do. Thats for every aspect of it. I think engagement and investment in the community and social responsibility is like a big deal. Talk about it, you transition now from the Knicks and your consulting gig to the president of the Bucks. And that's kind of like you do it with great people around you. Thats a good run. Peter: Well, its having like Ive always said, people talk about their personal board of directors and what that is and I had the advantage and still have the advantage of my mother being the best consultant you could possibly have. Talk about that process. And that's what we try to do. Do you want to be in a place where people are having fun and were trying to get rid of all the toxic. "We had to build a new arena or we were going to move the team. You talk about how do people help you think through clutch times. Defenders are responsible for calling fouls. Peter: Yeah, so I think its here and I think its all about the customization, right. But in a short period of time, the prospect and the opportunity of just not running a team, but kind of building a city and the real estate and the expansion and kind of where Milwaukee was as a city and kind of an inflection point was just kind of one of these miracle situations. I guarantee you'll find motivation and guidance from this remarkable man. Peter Feigin: I mean, my mouth just watered. John: Was Sonny Werblin still around, or was that the same? You miss falling on the ground, Dan Feigin said. By the way, Aaron is a fanatical basketball fan, and by the way, a regular classic Wisconsin superstar wants to come to a game, pays for his ticket wants to be left to watch the game. Right? John: It looks amazing. He said it. My wifes born in El Salvador came here when she was 9 to Brooklyn. I wanted to eat some. And I think he's going to sell the team. I've known him from a rookie to where he is now and Khris obviously. It's kind of like the joy of, like I said, I was a rough athlete compared to the Olympian and All-Star I'm talking to. Then I think as we keep exploring and kind of whats happening with online gambling and whats happening with NFTs and whats happening in the ticketing business, that it all evolves with technology, will be really interesting. Kevin Draughon, a former student at Trevor Day School, drove on Dan Feigin, who runs the pickup games on Saturdays at the schools gym. He notes that with the Bucks also opening a G League team calledthe Wisconsin Herdthis past fall, there was internal debate about making the investment, but Edens was a notable force moving the decision forward. And I obviously was kind of like I call myself the Division 3 dream. In July 2015, Feigin basically introduced himself to Wisconsin lawmakers with a stark proposal: If $250 million in public funding was not approved -- Edens, Lasry, third owner Jamie Dinan and Kohl had already combined to put up $250 million) -- the NBA would exercise its right to buy back the Bucks from the new ownership group for $25 million more than it had paid Kohl. Id been in a big market. Peter, before I let you go, I have to ask you. Peter: Yeah, I think number one is to explain kind of a small market. It really is. We were either 29th or 30th in a league of 30 teams, we were in a 25-year-old arena, that part of this was how do we get a new arena built? I guarantee youll find motivation and guidance from this remarkable man. So, just being a part of that, I mean, I know it sounds crazy. And I think what happened in this year, in so many ways, was a great splash of ice water thinking like, "Boy, we got a long way to go." Well, that's you. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. But it's also, listen like I wish, I have patience for nothing, and I think what I'm learning and trying to get a grip of is like how do we chip away over every issue of social justice. Talk about the journey to the Bucks and how did that happen and then why Milwaukee? Peter Feigin: Yeah. It's like how do we, between us, like as you know. So I'm never a great example of where the balance is and what the cut off is in everything because it's all one big puzzle to me. Like you said at the top of the show, very few human beings even get to be in this position in any professional sports level. But his primary challenge is to build a bridge from that world to the real world that includes a home town that is torn by strife and economic stress and forge a connection with a state that has distanced itself from the . It's like it really is part of your life. "We know the reality is 18 months ago, no one would've said Giannis is one of the top five players in the NBA, so we've had really what we would call the Giannis Effect," Feigin explains. How do we become attractive and bring more companies here and bring more empty nesters and college graduates and make this a really attractive place to live. All of a sudden, 12 months ago, that went upside down, and with Giannis, it literally went international, national, regional, local, which is a great turnaround for us.". You really need to build equity and build trust especially in the Midwest youve. But this is literally a business based on humans and psychology and emotion and how we feel every day. So, this had been a surreal year and tough as a leader because it's exhausting. These are special socks, so you bring me back a pair of socks. That automatically and having him sign for the next five years, that gives you this springboard that we think. There's got to be ways to get there. This is a super special edition. NBA all-star, olympic gold medalist & world-class investor. It just kind of really trying. John: Talking about teaching, we have 15 years of this podcast, so we have thousands of young people around the world that actually tune in and listen and when we have someone like you on, Id like to ask you this. He thinks hes going to sell the team. Low and behold 24 hours, called him back and I said, oh, hes going to sell the team. If you have a partner in life, they'd better be a teammate. We thought we were a progressive, pretty forward thinking organization. So, how do we figure out and reorganize on the senior leadership pattern. The Giannis Effect has been a product of the digital age. Just so I get a little. And then I think on a parallel track, youre really building an infrastructure. He's not the smartest guy in the world, but he'll certainly know the business and he'll help you out beyond your hedge fund guys and your data guys.". So, I might have caught myself parking in that situation a couple of times as well and he's starting to document it, that I was a hypocrite. Jesse the Jet, no question. When you show up for the first day, are you pinching yourself? They cause matchup problems for their fathers friends. And I'm not that much of a spiritual person, but I feel like I have been blessed/lucky 10 times more than I ever thought I'd be in my whole life. By Gabe Friedman October 2, 2017 2:58 pm. In many ways, you were doing a startup when you came to Milwaukee with your partners. We are going to put in the notes Peters email address because he was kind enough to give us that. We were in this really awesome mode of, oh, this is a startup, like this is a startup. It was, like you couldn't even, if you had a thousand scenarios, of what the last year could be for the Milwaukee Bucks and what you're kind of thinking about and dealing with, it's just been a pretty incredible ride and ton of emotion. John Shegerian: This edition of the Impact podcast is brought to you by ERI. John: Now, you married, what, wife is a native New Yorker? How do we sit here and I think like, how could the Millwaukee Bucks not be, not Americas team, but Globals team. Peter Feigin didn't go looking for his job as president of the Milwaukee Bucks. Feigin's twin brother, Daniel, is director of the upper school at New York City's Trevor Day School. Are you allowed to talk about that, Peter? And I think we find it like it's a responsibility where we can set the example and we can innovate and then we can shout it from the mountaintops. "That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God.. You were very part of that whole Marquis Jet, NetJet thing too, right? Peter Feigin: And how we almost flaunt it in a good way and it's kind of easy. How does it really work? I heard or to make the statement, are you the employee of the month? The Bucks are one of the 17 teams that is competing in the new NBA 2K League, a necessary decision in Feigin's mind. Peter Feigin: Hey, John thanks for having me. I became the president of the company for a number of years, and then we got absorbed by NetJets and took on that role at NetJets for a couple of years, and really learned incredibly, had this opportunity to learn P&L and operational. And I think with time, you certainly kind of can take that. Their experience is basketball. And you've done this a number of times throughout your career and your life. So, that part of it was awesome. I mean, now that I worked for three owners that are kind of in finance and private equity and guys who take real big bets and everything, I don't know if I was so much of a risk taker as I was kind of attention deficit and impulsive. Peter: You are a genius because you use food as youre incentive and nothing better than ice cream. There's no right equation. How do we talk beyond just coming to Milwaukee, but how do we do business together? But for us, it's kind of like, "How do we make an equal playing field? Please remember if youre going through Wisconsin, go and have some chicken tenders at the Cluckery. Peter: Well, I made one of the biggest mistakes ever to begin with. And what sort of plan could we have when there was some sort of light at the end of the tunnel to kind of ramp back up in a big way. John: This must be one of the greatest rides of her life seeing you do this whole journey, huh? Okay. And as Marc kind of ventured out over a decade ago . He loved you guys and what the conversation is.". And that's what we try to do. Peter Feigin: That this was a year you couldn't even imagine. But the overarching is how do we maintain kind of championship caliber excellence, like across the business and across the team. John: Just for a fun look, for our listeners sake. We are one big family. I actually read a whole story, theres a whole article, Peter, about your ring. "Why would we wait till tomorrow when we can get it done today?" Michael Red: I got my sources.
